A recent deal between the US and Russia to purchase diesel fuel has led to a growing rift between US President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. The agreement has raised concerns among lawmakers, who are questioning President Trump's support for Ukraine.
What happened
President Trump's decision to buy diesel fuel from Russia has put a sanctions bill on hold, which was crafted by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham and supported by 86 senators. This move has been criticized for potentially boosting Vladimir Putin's war machine. Meanwhile, Ukraine launched a significant aerial attack against Russian targets, including oil export terminals and an oil depot, using over 1,000 drones.
President Zelenskyy has expressed concerns that the US is not fully supporting Ukraine, and has warned against siding with Russia. He also reported that the US-provided internet service, Starlink, which is critical to Ukraine's war effort, was partially disabled, and believes it was a message from the US government. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied any US involvement in the disruption.
Lawmakers, including South Carolina Sen. Darline Graham and Ohio Republican Congressman Mike Turner, are calling for an investigation into the matter, citing concerns over the impact on Ukraine and the potential consequences of the US-Russia diesel deal.
