The Trump administration has urged China to impose the death penalty on some individuals involved in the production and distribution of illegal fentanyl. This request was made during a recent summit between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Washington, D.C.
China has taken steps to address concerns about the illicit supply of fentanyl, including the arrest of 21 Chinese citizens in August 2026 for manufacturing and distributing precursor chemicals. Beijing has also imposed new export controls on certain chemicals and classified synthetic opioids as deadly drugs.
The US has seen a significant number of deaths due to fentanyl overdoses in recent years, with a peak of nearly 74,000 deaths in 2022. However, recent data indicates a decline in opioid-related overdose deaths, with 44,564 deaths reported in 2025.
China has been identified as a major supplier of precursor chemicals used to produce fentanyl, and both the Biden and Trump administrations have pressured Beijing to crack down on the illicit distribution of these chemicals.
