What happened
War Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced a plan to ensure all service members can vote in elections. The plan involves a one-day stand-down from training operations in October of every election year, allowing service members to cast their votes without obstacles.
Hegseth noted that many service members face challenges when trying to vote, such as living far from their home states and having to complete absentee ballots. The stand-down will give them the opportunity to fill out their ballots, help family members do the same, or go to the polling place in person.
The War Department typically uses stand-downs for emergency training or to address specific issues. Hegseth referenced a previous stand-down directed by former Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, which addressed the threat of extremism after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Hegseth emphasized that the goal of the stand-down is to ensure service members can exercise their right to vote, without influencing their choices. He stated that the War Department will prioritize voting and make it easier for service members to participate in the democratic process.
