The United States has increased pressure on Iran by warning foreign financial institutions that they may face sanctions if they continue to do business with the country. The U.S. Treasury Department stated that Iran relies on shadow banking networks to move money through the global financial system, using trusted intermediaries, front companies, and shell companies to disguise financial transactions.
The Treasury Department has urged financial institutions to strengthen measures to identify and disrupt such activity, and has pointed banks to previous guidance on sanctions evasion, front companies, digital assets, and illicit oil smuggling. This warning is part of the Operation Economic Outcast sanctions campaign, which aims to cut Iran off from the U.S. financial system.
The U.S. government has also imposed additional sanctions on Tehran, targeting Iran's automotive and rail industries, as well as individuals and companies involved in Iran's shipping, aviation, technology, gold, and digital asset sectors. Iranian officials have dismissed the sanctions campaign, arguing that it will not change Tehran's position.
