What happened
Wholesale inflation in the US has reached its highest level in nearly four years, driven by a significant increase in energy costs. The Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 6.3% annually in September, up from 5.6% in August, and marked the largest annual increase since December 2022.
The surge in wholesale prices was largely driven by a 10.8% increase in energy costs, with wholesale gasoline prices jumping 20.3% in September. The increase in energy costs has put pressure on businesses, which are facing higher expenses for transportation, equipment operation, and supply chain management.
The PPI increase has added to concerns over inflation, which is threatening to squeeze household budgets and put pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate in September, bringing its target range to 3.75% to 4%.
The inflation surge has been exacerbated by the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran, which has disrupted global energy markets and led to higher oil and fuel costs. As a result, American households are facing financial pressures, with wage growth struggling to keep pace with rising prices.
