An independent review has found serious security flaws at Utah Valley University, where conservative icon Charlie Kirk was murdered over a year ago. The 157-page report from the Lake Forest Group identified gaps in security and a failure by university officials to follow their own policies.
The report found that the university's security was understaffed and unprepared for the event, which was attended by around 3,000 people. Only six campus police officers were assigned to the event, despite the university police chief requesting more officers.
The review also found that the university lacked a comprehensive written security assessment or action plan, and that technology, such as real-time monitoring of camera feeds, was not fully utilized. The report noted that if such footage had been monitored in real-time, Kirk's death could have been avoided.
The university's president, Jon Anderson, released a statement saying that the university's commitment to safety does not end with the report, and that its findings will guide continued safety efforts. The Kirk family's attorney, Brett Parkinson, stated that the university's security failures rendered Kirk helpless to the shooter and that justice requires true accountability for the university's fatal shortcomings.
