Over 20 world leaders, including Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, have signed a declaration calling for artificial intelligence to be kept under strict human control.

Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has joined over 20 world leaders in signing a declaration that calls for artificial intelligence to be kept under strict human control. The statement was released in New York City during the U.N. General Assembly and marks a coordinated effort by countries to regulate the growth of AI.

The declaration emphasizes the need for AI to remain under human direction, oversight, and control, as well as be contained under international law. It also calls for common standards to be enforced by governments and Big Tech companies.

Signatories of the declaration include leaders from Canada, Germany, Spain, and the European Commission. Notably, the United States and China did not sign the statement.

Prime Minister Albanese stated that humans need to be in control of AI for it to be successful, and that Australia played a central role in driving the statement. He also met with Apple Executive Chairman Tim Cook to discuss AI risks and Australia's social media ban.
