Xi Jinping's US Visit Yields Modest Tariff Relief Agreement

Xi Jinping's US Visit Yields Modest Tariff Relief Agreement
Breitbart News

Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the US yielded a modest tariff relief agreement, lowering tariffs on $60 billion worth of trade goods, but little else of substance was achieved.

What happened

Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the US resulted in a modest tariff relief agreement, which lowers tariffs on $60 billion worth of trade goods. The agreement is expected to benefit American farmers and manufacturers by giving them more access to China's market, while also reducing the cost of Chinese imports for American consumers.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce hailed the tariff agreement as a first step toward creating favorable conditions for bilateral economic and trade cooperation. The US Trade Representative noted that the reduced tariffs on nonsensitive goods would help to reduce inflation. Market analysts expect a boost to bilateral trade from the agreement, but not by a huge margin.

Additionally, China tightened its controls on two more precursor chemicals for deadly fentanyl, bringing the total list of controlled chemicals to 18. The trade deal also included the creation of a Board of Trade to manage bilateral trade issues and a general commitment to a bilateral dialogue on artificial intelligence.

Despite the tariff relief agreement, the visit was seen as underwhelming by many analysts, with no breakthroughs on major global issues such as AI, the Iran war, and Taiwanese independence. The two leaders did not even issue a joint statement after their meeting, and the deliverables on trade, rare earths, and investment were limited and tentative.
