"Let There Be Light"

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16

It took me a long time to truly understand what these verses meant. I originally thought Jesus was saying to go out and make known all of the good deeds you are doing. But in Isaiah 64:6 God tells us our righteous acts are like filthy rags and later in Mark 10:18 that only God is good. How could anything good come from my life? And if anything good could come from it how could I possibly brag about it to anyone?

Then I realized Jesus didn’t come into this world to just save me. He came in this world to save all of us. Therefore it isn’t us that shine’s but it is He that shines from within us. It is His great light and not are own. God turns on that light within our lives and purposely puts it out into the open for all to see.

The thing however about light is that once it is turned on everything that wasn’t seen is now seen. That means not just the good things but also the bad and the ugly things are now visible too. Everything you have ever done right there in the open for all to see. But the purpose isn’t to put us to shame but to reveal God’s nature through His unconditional love and unfailing mercy towards us.

So many of us live in fear for our terrible deeds and sins being made known and won’t dare come any where near in to the light for the fear of rejection, condemnation, denial, isolation, judgment, and being cast away. Think of Adam and Eve in the beginning when they first sinned against God. They hid. Why? Not because they sinned but Adam confesses, “Because I am naked”. They hid for the fear of rejection of their nakedness being exposed.

And although God removed them from the garden and punished them He still loved them. He could have destroyed them right then and there. But instead He made garments for them for their sake, and even spoke the very first prophesy of Jesus through Eve. And God remained with them despite not being in the Garden any more.

God is not ashamed of us but loves us. He wants to display His love through your life for others to see as a real living example of His promise. The power of His love is real and life changing, and transforms the motivations and purposes in our hearts to live for love rather then sin or selfishly.

Have you struggled to find purpose, value, significance, or meaning in your life? Have you struggle with fear of rejection, despair, hopelessness, or condemnation? Do you want your life to matter? If so pray in the Spirit of Matthew 5:14-16:

Dear Heavenly Father,

I thank you for who you are, and I thank you for sending your son Jesus to die on the cross for my sins and forgiving me. I thank you for your Holy Spirit revealing your Word, purposes, and promises for my life. I pray according to your Word in Matthew 5:14-16 in the great name of Jesus that you may shine your magnificent light through my life and into the lives of others around me that others too may know the same great love as I have in you. I pray all fear of rejection, condemnation, isolation, despair, and hopelessness is removed by your great name Jesus,
